Itinerary
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be greeted by the Akagera Aviation team and transferred to your awaiting Primate Safaris guide for a brief overview of your safari. Begin your journey with an 8-hour scenic drive to Nyungwe National Park, passing through Butare, Rwanda’s second-largest city. En route, visit the Kings Palace in Nyanza, the heart of Rwanda’s ancient monarchy, and the Butare National Museum, home to East Africa’s finest ethnographic collection. After a lunch stop at Ibis Hotel, continue your journey to Nyungwe, arriving at your luxurious lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.
After an early breakfast, you’ll set off for Nyungwe Forest to embark on an unforgettable chimpanzee trekking experience. The hike into the forest, home to a significant population of chimpanzees, offers chances to encounter other primate species. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch, followed by an exhilarating canopy walk. Suspended 70 meters above the forest floor, this 160-meter long bridge provides a bird's-eye view of Nyungwe's lush ecosystem. End the day with dinner and a relaxing overnight stay.
Rise early for another trek into Nyungwe Forest, this time to observe the Ruwenzori Colobus monkeys. This species, known for their striking black-and-white fur, is a highlight of the forest, where troops of up to 400 individuals roam freely. Afterward, enjoy lunch at the lodge and then embark on a 4-hour drive to the picturesque shores of Lake Kivu. Arrive in Gisenyi, where you'll have the evening to relax at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel.
After a leisurely breakfast, continue your journey to the northern end of Lake Kivu and drive to Volcanoes National Park, approximately 1 hour away. Arrive at the luxurious One & Only Gorilla’s Nest for check-in and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before dinner and overnight at the lodge.
This morning, depart early for the Volcanoes National Park Headquarters for your briefing before embarking on the highly anticipated gorilla trek. The trek, which can take anywhere from 2 to 6 hours, leads you deep into the heart of the volcanic mountains to meet one of the mountain gorilla families. You will have one hour to observe and photograph these gentle giants. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before heading back to Kigali.
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before being transferred to Kigali International Airport for your flight home, marking the end of this unforgettable journey through Rwanda’s primate haven. This expertly curated tour by Africa Journeys Escapes offers not only exceptional wildlife encounters but also a chance to explore Rwanda's rich culture and breathtaking landscapes.
