Itinerary
Transfer to Nyungwe National Park Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by the Primate Safaris team for a quick briefing on your upcoming adventure. Then, enjoy a scenic 8-hour drive through the Rwandan countryside, passing the charming city of Butare. Along the way, visit the historic Kings Palace in Nyanza, once the seat of the Rwandan monarchy, followed by the Butare National Museum, which holds the finest ethnographic collection in East Africa. After lunch at Ibis Hotel in Butare, continue to Nyungwe National Park, where you will check in at the luxurious One & Only Nyungwe House for dinner and overnight stay.
Start your day early with breakfast, followed by a transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park for a memorable chimpanzee trek. These great apes, closely related to humans, roam freely in the park’s rich biodiversity. During your hike, you may also encounter other primates. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch before an exhilarating canopy walk in the afternoon. This suspended bridge, 70 meters above the forest floor, offers breathtaking views of Nyungwe’s lush canopy.
Transfer to Lake Kivu Another early breakfast awaits before a trek into Nyungwe Forest to observe the large troops of black-and-white Angolan Colobus monkeys, one of the largest in Africa, with numbers ranging between 350-400 individuals. Afterward, enjoy lunch at the lodge and embark on a scenic 4-hour drive to the tranquil shores of Lake Kivu. Arriving in Gisenyi, check in to the Lake Kivu Serena Hotel for dinner and overnight.
After breakfast, enjoy a leisurely morning at Lake Kivu before transferring to Volcanoes National Park, located in the northern reaches of Rwanda. This scenic drive takes approximately one hour, offering beautiful vistas along the way. Upon arrival, check in to Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, a luxurious retreat near the park, for dinner and an overnight stay.
Prepare for one of the most unforgettable experiences of your life with an early breakfast, followed by a transfer to the park headquarters for a briefing on mountain gorilla trekking. Your trek through the dense volcanic forests may take between 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. Once you find them, you’ll have an hour to observe and photograph these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. Afterward, return to the lodge for a refreshing lunch and then begin your 3-hour drive back to Kigali.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your hotel before a transfer to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight, reflecting on the profound memories of your Rwandan adventure. This unforgettable journey, crafted by Rift & Tide Africa, combines cultural immersion, scenic landscapes, and close encounters with Rwanda's incredible primates, providing you with a truly unique safari experience.
